Mother Nature: My New Frienemy

As I was rushing around running errands and preparing for the impending "blizzard"  I came to a conclusion: Mother Nature is bipolar. I was cruising down Rt 1, with my sunroof open and jamming away and I realized the irony of my situation! Here I am running around making sure we have food, salt, shovels and all the other snowy essentials yet the weather was gorgeous and the sun was shining brightly. That's when I made my decision, Mother Nature has issues...BIG issues.

However, upon reflection on my new mission in life, I tried to really take a closer look at the situation. Aren't we always looking for options? Whether its lease or buy a new car; Rent or purchase a home; credit or debit; Exxon or Texaco; Chipotle or Baja Fresh..... This nation thrives on having options. So then why is it that I can't just relax and appreciate the fact that today I can walk outside with a light jacket and drive with my windows down and tomorrow I'll have to wear a parka and will be lucky to find my car after it's buried in the snow? Answer is: I can! I get to have a warm day today and enjoy the anticipation of spring but I also get to be snowed in and enjoy a couple of days filled with movies and hot chocolate with my wonderful husband!

The hidden beauty of snow days is that it is Mother Nature's way of telling us to take a break from our all too busy and hectic lives and to open our eyes and appreciate the things we may take for granted. When was the last time that you took time to do absolutely nothing but sit at home all day in your pajamas with the people that matter most in your life? For me, the last time was the last snow storm. So instead of criticizing good ol' Mother Nature, I thank her for reminding me that no matter what's going on in our lives, it's not the do all or end all to simply take a breather!

  1. Way to go, Maria! Love your new site, and cheers to seeing more beauty and finding the joy waiting in everyday life! Thanks to Mother Nature, I have taken time to go sledding with my kids, and haven't had this much fun catching air time since I was a kid! Happy trails, and see you soon!
